The formula difference, explained simply

A standard candlestick needs no calculation - it is the literal record of what happened. Heikin Ashi requires a four-part formula applied to that same raw data:

  • HA Close = (Open + High + Low + Close) ÷ 4 - the average of all four raw prices
  • HA Open = (Previous HA Open + Previous HA Close) ÷ 2 - this is the part that creates the smoothing effect, since it pulls forward the prior candle's already-averaged values
  • HA High = the highest of (High, HA Open, HA Close)

What this looks like visually
